Interview with bible board game founder, Sibusiso Bukaza

The game teaches in an interactive way biblical concepts such as forgiveness, love, giving, grace and patience

Many of us grew up playing board games. From snakes and ladders, monopoly to 30 seconds, family time has been defined by board games in our shelves. As a Christian, have you ever wondered what if there could be a board game that is not only fun but able to teach biblical concepts and help one memorise scripture in the process? Well, one man has turned that thought into reality and today we chat to Sibusiso Bukaza, the man behind the the bible board game, Mind The Verse.

In brief, tell us about the game

Mind The Verse Christian Board Game is a bible quiz game that tests your memory and your knowledge of the Bible in a fun and interactive way. It has questions that cater for all types of believers who are in different levels of knowledge concerning the Word of God with questions ranging from Easy, Intermediate to Hard. The game also has obstacles that you need to overcome as you run your race to the finish line.

When is the best time to play the game?

Mind The Verse is a game for all times and can be enjoyed by families, young adults, youth, and children under parental supervision. From a braai with friends to Christian Camps, Mind The Verse is the game to have.

Who are the people behind the game?

The people behind the game are my lovely wife and I. I am the designer and the developer of the game, with the invaluable support and input of my lovely wife. So basically if it was a house, I dug the foundation, built the walls and set the roof in place, and my wife took that structure, painted it, furnished it and made it a beautiful home to live in. I have also received invaluable feedback, advice and support from my family and friends. Our online store for instance was done by a dear friend of mine who generously offered his services pro bono.

What inspired you to make this game?

When I was a student at Wits University, I attended a couple of Christian camps, picnics and braais. In those gatherings I noticed that we always played secular board games, and this bothered me. The question in my heart was “Why don’t we have Christian board games?” I then thought to myself that the fact that this problem bothers me so much means I’m probably the one meant to solve it. So I took that responsibility upon myself and answered the call. As soon as I began the creative process, ideas started flowing.

How long did it take you from concept to prototype?

I would say it took me about 6 to 12 months and this was due to the fact that I was a university student at the time. Once the prototype was available, I made some minor adjustments here and there as the need arose. I’ve had the prototype in my possession for a couple of years now, and we didn’t release the game then because we had to perform the necessary due diligence.

Who is your target audience?

Our target audience is all Christ loving and Bible believing Christians between the ages 18 to 65 who can read and speak English. This includes university students and graduates, Christian families and Churches in South Africa and subsequently in the rest of the world. We are considering the possibility of translating the game into other South African languages in order to be more inclusive. A few people have expressed that they would appreciate an Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu and Sotho version of the game. We would like to offer that in due time.

Is there an age restriction for the game?

Yes, Mind The Verse has small components which can cause harm to little children if swallowed. Therefore the game may be played by anyone who is 8 years old and above but children may only play under parental supervision.

How many people can play?

Mind The Verse can be played by individuals or groups. When played by individuals, the minimum is 2 players and the maximum is 6 players. When played by teams, the minimum is 2 teams and the maximum is 6 teams, but the number of members per team is up to the players to decide. So it’s basically unlimited depending on the team arrangements.

Any plans to have the game available in game stores, bookshops and supermarkets?

We are currently considering the various platforms which are available and the feasibility of each. We would like to see Mind The Verse Christian Board Game in the shelves of the leading bookstores and retail outlets in the country. Our goal is to get Mind The Verse in the homes of believers across the country and across the world in an easy, efficient and convenient manner.

Somebody out there wants to support, what does support look like?

We welcome any support that will contribute in making Mind The Verse reach every home. That support can be as little as sharing our social media posts with people in your sphere of influence, inviting us for radio/TV interviews, to placing Mind The Verse Christian Board Game on the shelves of your bookstore(s). We welcome and appreciate any support from the children of the God, and we’d like to express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have supported us, and that includes gospelbuzzafrica. Thank you!

What is the one thing you want the world to know?

I want the world to know that God loves them and that is why He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for their sins in their place. The world needs to know that, and believe that, and repent of their sins, and be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ in order to escape the wrath of God which will be poured out on all who do not believe the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Any words of encouragement to those who are struggling to release their dreams?

Be patient with yourself, though the vision may tarry, it will surely come to pass. Pray and make your
requests known to our heavenly Father, He is faithful. When it’s time, everything will fall into place.
In the meantime, prepare, practice, connect with other believers and sharpen your skills so that your
day of visitation finds you ready.
